The Tradition behind Christening Garments

Christening is considered one of the most important religious rites to be practiced by a person of faith as it symbolizes one's admittance as a new member of the Christian community. As a sacrament, baptism is filled with symbolism. The baptismal gown itself is more than a white garment made of quality soft silk or cotton. It has a special meaning.

For many families, the baptismal robes are often kept as keepsakes or mementos. Because the garment is only meant to be worn once in a child's life, some keep the long, white, typically intricately detailed clothes as an heirloom that is used by babies born within the family in the next generations.

Baptismal garments are made long and white because the robes are supposed to symbolize the purity and innocence of the infant. It was sometime during the late nineteenth century when the robes started turning from simple white linen robes to intricately designed clothing sets, often sporting white work embroidery trimmed with lace. The robes often have matching bonnets and could be worn by both boys and girls.

Nowadays, christening gowns are available to any parent that is looking to purchase the stunning gown. There are more gender specific gowns to choose from such as the boys' garments which have a simpler yet sophisticated look and the girls' garments that are made using delicate embroidery and lace work. The long train has also become more of an option now, with modern baptismal robes appearing more like baby Sunday dresses for girls or white suits for boys. They are still traditionally used once then stored as a keepsake or family heirloom, so when choosing the perfect baptism  gown, one important factor to consider is finding an exquisite christening outfit that is hand-crafted with the finest materials.
